  • The Fun Side of Learning

Hello to my Colors Are Magic friends! I’m so excited to be guest posting for Nickey today!
I’m Stephanie from The Nanny Journals.

That monkey on my back is my bff, M. He’s two-and-a-half and we spend a lot of time together.
We basically tell each other everything.
Now, if you couldn’t tell from my blog, I’m M’s nanny.
I’ve been with the little guy since the day he was born and it’s been the best 2.5 years of my career.

  • Nickey’s Bookshelf {Chapter 6}

Hi, guys! I hope that February has been great. I can’t believe that we are already almost to March 2016– geez whiz! Welcome back to my bookshelf! If you are new to this blog, this is my little corner of the web to share some of my favorite children’s books I have collected over the past 11 years as a nanny (or have put on my wish list).

This afternoon I was wandering through Barnes and Noble, and naturally I ended up right in the middle of the Children’s section. Oh, children’s books, how I love thee. Here are a couple of books that I stacked up next to me in a corner on the floor. They quickly became new “friends”.

  • Fossil Excavation Sensory Bin

I am a big Jurassic Park fan (dinosaurs are rad)! It’s actually kind of hilarious because A. I pretty much only watch kids movies and rom coms and B. I am border line terrified whenever a dinosaur attacks or eats a person, so I watch much of it with my hands over my eyes. But I can’t help it– it’s so fun to “see” dinosaurs and the parks are so full of imagination. Needless to say, once Sprinkles moved in– we had an introductory marathon. She also loved it! So, on a quest to create more dinosaurs on this blog we thought it would be fitting to make a dinosaur themed sensory play bin.

  • Unicorn Dough

Growing up as a young unicorn in the Cotton Candy Kingdom was epic. Most of it is made of candy. It’s magical. Everything is crazy loud colors. I guess interning with Nickey at Colors Are Magic just made sense… and made the USA feel more like home.

I know it is probably not easy to grasp this concept as a human… but I actually find ordinary things more exciting than magical ones. I mean, I can zap anything into existence with my horn… but humans make things out of their hands. I find t much more impressive. Nickey knows how much I love play dough, so this week we made a new batch of it and she suggested it be unicorn themed! I love it! It even smells like root beer (which is totally fitting, as that is what our rivers are made of)!

  • Creating with Candy

Hi! It’s me, Sprinkles! I am Nickey’s pet unicorn, and the intern here at, Colors Are Magic.

Today I want to talk about…CANDY! I am sure that you have been seeing more of it than you wish to around your house due to Valentine’s Day… and guess what? Easter is just around the corner! So I thought it would be great to put together a little post about some fun ways you can use up that candy with your kids without having to consume all of it. Don’t be embarrassed, you’re not the only parent who sneaks a taste of their kid’s candy when they are sleeping. I know many of them!

  • Wiggly Waves Sensory Bin

I recently took up a new part-time nanny gig with an adorable little munchkin. She is honestly one of the most laid back baby’s I have ever met in my life– such a delight. I of course was excited to try a new sensory play project with her! I am proud to say she enjoyed it just as much… (if not more) than me! Which is great…. because it’s for her, ha! It’s fun, squishy, and smells like heaven. If you have a baby or a toddler who loves to play in messes and explore, this is a great option for you.

  • Nerds Garden

On Valentines Day Sprinkles received a giant box of Nerds. Nerds are not her favorite candy… but it’s the thought that counts. We decided that since we have been really into creating with candy the past few weeks, that we would do the same with the Nerds. If you would like to create a sweet smelling garden with Nerds… keep reading!

      Here’s what you’ll need:

    Spray Bottle (with water)

    Watercolor Paper

    Colored Pencils

  • Laffy Taffy Finger Paints

I am not going to lie… I love banana Laffy Taffy. It’s delicious… and smells amazing. It’s even my favorite color… yellow. So while walking up and down the Valentine’s aisle,  with Sprinkles, I decided to pick up a bag of Laffy Taffy. While painting Sprinkle’s hooves and munching on a piece, I got an idea. Why not try making finger paints out of them? Seriously, why not? We have been painting with a lot of candy lately. It’s been better for our teeth and adds more fun colors to hang on our refrigerator.

They turned out great and smelled amazing. If you would like to try creating with your candy instead of eating it, you should really try out this recipe!

  • Pixy Stix Watercolors

My pet unicorn, Sprinkles, is a big fan of Pixy Stix. I am not crazy about them… I am not huge on sour things and let’s face it– its like drinking straight up sugar. Unicorns, unlike humans, require a lot of unrefined sugar in their diets to stay healthy… so we keep them on hand. The orange ones are like vitamin C to unicorns. Last week I made Sprinkles a big bowl of mixed Pixy Stix powders. As I was pouring them into her bowl, I had an idea. I wonder if I mixed water into one of the colors I could make a paint. Well… it totally worked. So I made paints out of all the colors! Sprinkles was happy and so was I. Perfect.

  • Whipped Hearts

Hey! It’s Sprinkles (Nickey’s pet unicorn).

Oh, Valentine’s Day. I know that for some people it is a bit depressing at times (I have been there– there aren’t very many unicorns in Colorado)… but I am not gonna lie…  I love it when the aisles fill up with a thousand shades of pink and hearts. It’s so pretty! One of our Valentine’s traditions is to make extra chocolatey hot chocolates and topping them with some beautiful and super yummy whipped hearts. They are perfect if you are having a Valentine’s Day or “Gal-entines Day” party!
