Sensory Play

  • SNACK STAMPS

Whenever Sprinkles and I are cooking a meal together, it is always my job to slice any fruits or veggies that we may need. Being a unicorn has it’s perks, but slicing things up with hooves is usually a disaster. Well, this weekend while slicing and dicing I noticed that some of the produce had a bit of an artistic edge to it. So after we ate lunch… we played with our food. I know growing up your mother probably told you not to do this, but please… today I am encouraging it. Here are some fun “Snack Stamp” ideas for you and your littles. Have a blast!

  • Enchanted Sensory Bottle

Hi! It’s me, Sprinkles. I am Nickey’s pet unicorn and the intern here at Colors Are Magic. I’m so glad you stopped by! This week while Nickey is out nannying one of our littlest friends, I am going to share a fun sensory play project with you.

  • Sand Dough

Summer has been great so far. Sprinkles and I have had fun traveling, visiting friends and family, and being in the sunshine! However, we have not made it to the beach yet. I have lived at the beach a few times before I met Sprinkles in Central Park, so I get a little sad when I am away from it for too long. So we decided to bring the beach to us… with Sand Dough! Now we can make our own sand castles at your dining room table…. and so can you and your kiddos!

  • Science Paint

My pet unicorn, Sprinkles has always had a knack for science. She was always at the top of her class in the Cotton Candy Kingdom (CCK). Now, science in the CCK is very different than it is here- their experiments often lead to creating magical potions and some experiments actually come life! It’s so cool. One time Sprinkles and I went over to her friend’s place to tutor his little brother with science fair project. We mixed some singing flowers, fairy dust, river soda and mermaid scales together in little jars and we created… Science Paint! It was crazy beautiful… AND everything that we painted with it came to life or would begin to sing songs. Basically the coolest thing ever.

  • Pixie Dough

It’s been rainy here in Colorado the past few days… and as a result, Pixie Dough was born. #MyLittleSweetPotatoPie loved it! I consider it a win whenever something entertains her for more than 10 minutes– and we played with our Pixie Dough for almost a whole hour. Win.

It is really easy to make. In fact you may already have the ingredients laying around the house. I am not sure why, but the cheaper the conditioner the better the result. That is why I have listed Suave. I like using it for this project the best.

  • Cotton Candy Sensory Play

When you think of Cotton Candy, I am sure you have fond memories of going to the fair, carnival or perhaps the beach boardwalk. I have fond memories of those things too. However, when you have a pet unicorn who grew up in a magical land called, The Cotton Candy Kingdom, you get all sorts of extra sweet memories. Pun intended.

  • Jurassic Jigglers (Sensory Play)

Sorry that my posts haven’t been constant this week– I had a little health episode and had to go to the hospital. I am fine– but your on going prayers and good vibes are greatly appreciated. You guys the beeeeest!

On a happier and more colorful note- here is a project I did with #MyLittleSweetPotatoPie last week. She and I share a love of Jell-O’s wiggly jiggly nature and dinosaurs. So I combined the two to make a fun sensory play activity for baby: Jurassic Jigglers :) She loved going on her baby version of a “dino excavation” and I am sure your little paleontoloigist will too!

  • Seaside Sensory Bottle

I have always been slightly obsessed with the ocean. When I was a toddler I would physically shake from excitement when I would see water… even if was only a mud puddle. As I got into second grade Free Willy became my favorite move… and Orcas, my favorite animal. I may or not not have done a skit for my second grade class where I was Jesse and my friend was Willy the whale. Classic. Anyhow, the ocean has always had my heart. I decided that this sensory bottle project should be ocean themed and it turned out sweet!

  • Painting with Animals

Growing up my brother and I loved to make “tracks’ in the dirt and our PlayDoh with our trucks, toy animals and whatever we could get our hands on. So, the other night I was thinking to myself… why not make rainbow tracks with paint? I posted a tutorial a little over a week ago called Creating with Cars, and it was so fun! This week I thought we would try Painting with Animals! You little ones will love creating and imagining with their toy animals.

  • Creative Outdoor Sensory Play!

I started putting together this post because the weather in Colorado was beautiful yesterday. It felt like summer was here to stay and play. Then… at about 8pm last night I found out that we are having a blizzard. Starting tomorrow. Oh my goodness. I am not sure who ticked off Elsa, but we are in the process of making our “Blizzard Grocery List” for the weekend. So, to those of you in places where it feels like summer and are blizzard free– this is for you. I will live vicariously through you.
