Unicorn Spit Coasters

I know this may sound like a gross question… but have any of you ever seen unicorn spit? It’s  so pretty! So is their snot…. check out this post if you don’t believe me. Basically everything that my pet unicorn Sprinkles, does is beautiful. One evening after whipping up some homemade spaghetti I noticed from my kitchen view that Sprinkles was licking her plate clean. I took it as a compliment and let her go. Who needs manners on a Saturday night when you’re home in your sweats? Not us. When she brought the plate to the sink I stopped her from tossing it to soak in the sink. I had never noticed how pretty her spit was before! Swirling rainbow colors almost creating a tie dye effect were all over her white plate. Well of course colors are always getting my Colors Are Magic wheels turning so here is a way that you can make magical coasters that look like unicorn spit…. even if you don’t have a unicorn. 😉

Here’s what you’ll need…

White Ceramic Tiles

Sharpies

Isopropyl Alcohol

Clear Sealant Spray

(Optional: Stickers)

Let’s get started…

1.) Scribble some beautiful colors all over your tiles. We found that it ended up looking way cooler if we didn’t spend time drawing and coloring actual shapes before adding “the magic”. Here is an example of a coaster we made using the stickers. We also found that if you are going to use stickers, choosing ones made of foam work best. The ink is able to pool up around the edges and creates a look. We liked the way it turned out to put the stickers down first, before any sharpie ink is applied. Make to the color in all the little nooks and crannies!

2.) Using a dropper, “add your magic” by dripping small amounts of Isopropyl Alcohol serval tiles over your tiles and watch as the colors begin to magically swirl together like unicorn spit. So cool!

3.) This step is only for our friends who are playing with stickers! After about 30-40 minutes your coaster should be dry. Carefully peel your stickers off your coaster.

4.) Once your tiles have dried and all the stickers have been removed, it is time to seal them up! Take the outside and set on a drop clothes of old sheet. If you use a sheet, make sure to fold in half to make it thicker. We sprayed ours with the sealant twice. We waited about 1 hour until we applied the second coat. Our sealant is from the painting department in Home Depot.

5.) After everything is dry (we let ours sit over night in the garage on paper plates) it is time to go make a cup of tea or lemonade and enjoy those magic coasters of yours! They make great gifts for the grandparents as well.  :)
