Treasure Rocks

Sprinkles and I love going on treasure hunts! Pretending to be pirates is a personal favorite of mine. We dress up in eye patches, pirates hats, and set sail on an epic adventure. That being said, first official day of summer is just around the corner (but it sure is feeling summery already!) Here is a super fun project to do it just so happen to be hosting a Pirate or Neverland birthday party this summer– or if you just want to have a fun afternoon in your backyard with the littles. This project does take quite a few hours to finish, so if you are going to do it, I recommend making it all the night before the party or your playtime.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Small plastic gems/diamonds and fake gold

2 cups of flour

1 cup of salt

1 cup coffee grinds or potting soil

1 cup of water

Let’s get started!

1. Combine all of the above ingredients together in a large mixing bowl . Knead until your dough forms. We used coffee grounds and it made our Treasure Rocks smell incredible! Mmmm!!!

2. Place some “treasure” on a flat piece of dough and fold in–adding more dough to cover it as needed. Roll into the shape of an rock. Try and eliminate as many air bubbles as possible.

3. Let air dry for at least two to three days or if you need your rocks done quicker, bake at 200°F in the oven until dry and hard. I baked ours for 3 hours.

4. Hide them around your yard for your little pirates or geologists to find and excavate! They will love digging out their treasure! We used a Philips Head Screwdriver to crack our rocks open. If you have smaller children, you may want to help make the first crack and supervise.

 Happy Hunting!
