I have always loved teenagers. I know that they scare the crap out of a lot of people… but they are my jam. Ha! And since most of the projects on Colors Are Magic are geared more towards Preschool and Elementary kids- I thought it would be appropriate to post one for all you parents and nannies that have teens!

So, here are 15 super fun and “COOL” things to do things your teenagers! Enjoy.

  • Pixy Stix Watercolors

My pet unicorn, Sprinkles, is a big fan of Pixy Stix. I am not crazy about them… I am not huge on sour things and let’s face it– its like drinking straight up sugar. Unicorns, unlike humans, require a lot of unrefined sugar in their diets to stay healthy… so we keep them on hand. The orange ones are like vitamin C to unicorns. Last week I made Sprinkles a big bowl of mixed Pixy Stix powders. As I was pouring them into her bowl, I had an idea. I wonder if I mixed water into one of the colors I could make a paint. Well… it totally worked. So I made paints out of all the colors! Sprinkles was happy and so was I. Perfect.

  • 10 Fun Homemade Valentines

Hi! It’s me, Sprinkles! I am Nickey’s pet unicorn and intern here at Colors Are Magic. I am sure you are all well aware that Valentine’s Day is upon us! Also my favorite day… the day after Valentine’s day (when all of the chocolate and candy is 90% off). Ever since I moved to America from my hometown in the Cotton Candy Kingdom, I can’t seem to get enough chocolate. I guess it makes since.. I was named after my mother’s favorite food group… sprinkles.

In light of the upcoming holiday, I thought I would put together a little list of some fun homemade Valentine ideas for you to do with your kiddos. I hope you enjoy them!

  • Magic Marshmallow Paint

Having a pet unicorn is just as it sounds…. magical. Sprinkles, teaches me all sorts of super fun things from her “hometown” in the Cotton Candy Kingdom. Recently I posted a project called Hot Chocolate Paint. If you have not tried it already, you totally should! In it, I shared what paints are made from in the Cotton Candy Kingdom. I love that Sprinkles grew up painting with candies. I asked her it we could try out her recipe for white paint, as I had a a couple packs of Jet-Puffed Marshmallows at our house. She told me that we could make a whole pant set out of marshmallows because it’s a white base and we could add our own colors. I was sold.

  • Hot Chocolate Paint

I am sure that if you are a frequent reader of this blog, the fact that I love painting is no surprise to you. I just love it. In fact– there are few things I love more than applying paint to a brand new blank canvas. Well, that’s what I thought… until Sprinkles took to me to the Cotton Candy Kingdom to visit her parents and I saw how they paint. Are you ready for this?… In the Cotton Candy Kingdom, the citizens use candy to make paints. I know. Amazing. They mix the candies with a little unicorn magic, of course- but I still think it’s crazy cool. Here is a list of their colors:

  • Homemade Window Stickers

Today me and my pet unicorn, Sprinkles, went on a trip to the Cotton Candy Kingdom (where she grew up) to visit her friends and family. They are always doing all sorts of magical favors for us. For example, remember that one time that Sprinkles was having sleepless nights due to being afraid of monsters/nightmares and they helped me make Monster Spray and Magic Milk Potions to help her rest well at night? Not to mention all of the holiday perks we get from being friends with all the famous holiday icons. Well, it was time for us to return the favor.

  • Textured Paint Rollers For Kids

It’s been super rainy here in Colorado the past few weeks, so my pet unicorn, Sprinkles, and I have been spending a lot of time in doors (and probably a little too much time hanging out with our good friend “Netflix”). Just like little kids, if Sprinkles watches too much TV and doesn’t have enough stimulation she gets a little cranky. So, while we were out at the grocery store with my parents the other night, I decided enough is enough and headed over to the craft section at Walmart.

  • Lavender Oil Play Dough

As of late, I have been keeping a whole lot of veggies in my fridge. Last night my pet unicorn got up for a midnight snack and she had 3 carrots, 2 bell peppers, 1 head of lettuce, 3 beets, and 5 pieces of broccoli. You are probably wondering what the big deal is. Veggies are super healthy. Well, normally you would be right, but veggies have the same effect on a unicorn as a bag of Halloween candy would have on a child. She was bouncing off the walls. I have never seen anything like it in my life. So, I came up with a plan…. Lavender.

Lavender oil has many different healing properties, but the thing it’s known for the most is that it is calming. Now, my unicorn was way too wound up to do anything relaxing so I came up with a way to trick her into doing a calming activity: Playing with “Lavender Oil Play Dough”. Good news, it work for kids too.

  • Melt My Heart(s)

Growing up my mother made my brother and me an art cupboard. I loved that art cupboard. It was always full of fun treasure– markers, crayons, construction paper, stickers, paints, and various other knick-knacks. Every so often while cleaning the house, my mother would tidy the art cupboard. I hated those days… they were the worst. She would get out a blank sheet of paper and test the markers. If they had dried out they would go into the trash can. I guess that was understandable since they no longer worked. It was the crayons that were the hardest to part with. She would throw out the little nubs of crayon that where floating around our giant box. Maybe it was because I was over dramatic… or maybe it was because I was an artistic child– with every coloring device thrown in the the garbage bin was also an opportunity to create some great. Maybe it was a control issue…. or that I was just a little kid. Whatever the reason… I was not a fan of “clean the art cupboard day” and was known to shed a tear or two on the days it commenced. Until one fine day my mother suggested that we make giant tie dye crayons out of all my broken pieces instead of throwing them away. Brilliant. I was totally onboard.

  • Reindeer Food

It’s Christmas Eve! Things here at my apartment are getting quite exciting. My pet unicorn and I have trimmed the tree, wrapped presents for our friends and family, sent out our Christmas cards, and baked cookies for Santa. I love the smell of fresh pine and Christmas cookies!! It’s magic.

Christmas Eve is always a special time for my pet unicorn as she gets to see Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Yep, my pet unicorn and Rudolph are cousins. So, even though I must go to bed after leaving out milk and cookies for Santa, my unicorn stays up and waits to have a minute catching up with her cousin. Every year she makes him and Santa’s other reindeer magical “Reindeer Food”. You see, being a unicorn, she is able to apply specific colors to her recipe. Each color she uses has a different nutritional benefit for Santa’s reindeer.
