Pocket Pets

**Welcome to Love In Color! Where you help to color your world into a brighter and better place. Each week I will post a Love In Color challenge. These challenges will be fun and creative ideas that you can do with your kids (or by yourself!) to bring smiles, joy, and encouragement to your neighborhood and the rest of your world. Make sure you post your Love In Color challenges on social media (I myself am a Instagram-aholic. It’s a word.) and tag me/hash tag #colorsaremagic #projectloveincolor. I can’t wait to see all the magic you bring and may even repost your photos on my blog. Happy coloring!!**

I live in New York City. Anyone who lives here can tell you these two things:

Apartment hunting is a nightmare
Finding an apartment that is pet friendly is the icing on the nightmare cake.

(They can also tell you that if a subway car is empty… it’s empty for a reason. Stay away! But that has nothing to do with this post.)

So, as a Love in Color challenge I decided to make pocket pets for my neighbors who have been robbed of the joy of pets and living space (in exchange for living in the greatest city in the world). Now, I am not going to lie to you grown ups… this craft involves glitter and glitter is CRAZY messy. It is also crazy pretty and sparkly. This will be a craft that you will most likely want to do in the following spaces: outdoors, in your garage, or at a table with a drop clothes underneath and a plastic table cloth on top. I decided that I was a grown up so I could do this at my desk over a small piece of paper, while I watched The Devil Wears Prada on my MacBook Pro, and remain tidy. False. I have mopped my bedroom about 3 or 4 times since last night and still somehow have sparkly feet.

Here is what you will need:

1.) An assortment of small plastic animals (I got a tube of plastic pets and sea creatures at Michaels. You can also look at the 99 Cent Store and anywhere else that sells toys or knick-knacks.)

2.) Glitter (The more colors the more fun!)

3.) Mod-Podge (Gloss or Matte is fine)

4.) Paintbrushes

5.) A small poster board, card board or piece of paper to make a sign.

6.) Markers, crayons, and paint for making your sign colorful!

7.) Drop cloth & table cloth for the mess

Lets get started!

1.) First cover the floor with a drop cloth or newspaper and throw a disposable table cloth over the table you and the kiddos will be working at.

2.) Next use your paint brush to cover the animals in Mod-Podge.

3. While Mod-Podge is still wet, cover the animal in the color glitter of your choosing.

(Side note: I like to work on half the animal at a time and let them dry before I do the second half. Makes it easier to hold onto without smudging your beautiful work.)

4.) Make a fun sign to leave with your pets. For example, our said: Although not all New York apartments are pet friendly, your pocket always is. Pick a free pet! Happy Sunday! #colorsaremagic #projectloveincolor

5. Now for the best part! Giving them away. We took mine to Riverside Park and lined them on a stone wall. It was the weekend so I knew a lot of families would be there. I am not going to lie to you, it made my heart so happy to sit form a distance and watch peoples faces light up. Young and old. Get creative. You could even set up a “Free Pets” stand at the end of your driveway or on your stoop instead of a lemonade stand. It is sure to bring smiles.
