Melted Rainbow Sun Catchers

Well, there is a blizzard brewing here in New York City today. Literally. My pet unicorn has come down with a bit of a cold. I personally love blizzards. I love getting all snuggly in my Pj’s and drinking hot tea, watching movies, and painting all day long. But, it’s a little more complicated for unicorns. You see, blizzards cover all the colors outside in a giant layer of white, and although it maybe a beautiful winter wonderland to you and me… to a unicorn it creates an environment to get sick, as unicorns need colors to stay healthy. So, today we decided to make “Melted Rainbow Sun Catchers” to help her get the colors and sunlight that she needs to stay healthy during this snow storm. It’s fun and simple. If you would also like to make your own sun catchers I have left you instructions below.  (If you are making them with your kiddos, make sure you are assisting…there is ironing involved!)

2.) Next cut off a piece of your wax paper. I started with a sheet about 12-by-18-inches. Fold it in half along its length and then unfold again. Deposit your fun and colorful  crayon shavings in a pattern of your choosing. evenly but not thickly across one half of the paper. Fold the clean half of the paper over the shavings. Crimp the three open edges with a fold to hold in the crayon shavings.

3.) Protect your ironing surface with construction paper. Place the waxed paper on the construction paper, and cover it with another sheet of construction paper. Iron on medium heat, checking after every few swipes. Stop when all the shavings have melted and let your rainbows cool off.
