Magic Crayon Salt Dough

One of our favorite things to do at Colors Are Magic is to meltdown crayons. There are so many more possibilities than just coloring in the lines when it comes to a pack of crayons– although we do love to color. :) Here is one of my favorite ways to meltdown crayons.

Note: This craft I would recommend for older children as they will need to be able to color on the very warm dough without burning themselves. Make sure you supervise this project.

Here’s what you’ll need:

1 cup of salt

1 cup of flour

1/2 cup water

Assorted cookie cutters

Crayons

Parchment paper

Let’s get started!

Put of your ingredients in a bowl and mix well. We used a fork to mix it until it started to all come together. Then kneaded it with our hands until it was smooth.

Roll out your salt dough to about 1/2 a centimeter and use your cookie cutters to make whatever shapes your little hearts desire. We made unicorns, hearts and butterflies… of course! :)

After using your cookie cutters, place each of your super adorable salt dough cutouts onto parchment paper and bake at 200F for 3 hours. I know it’s a long time for littles to wait! Maybe make the dough together, have them cut it out and then have a little movie/popcorn party while you pass the time.

Draw on your warm salt dough creations with crayons. It is important that they are still very warm so that your crayons will melt. I would take them out of the oven little by little so that they stay warm while your kiddos color. Make sure to warn kiddos that the dough is very warm and they will need to color without holding onto the dough itself.

That’s it! Your crayons will meltdown on the dough and make a cool “waxy-glossy-colorful-glaze” on your salt dough creations. Beautiful!
