Fossilized Dino Eggs

Hi! It’s me, Sprinkles. For those of you who are new to the blog, I am Nickey’s pet unicorn and the intern here at Colors Are Magic. I am so happy that I get to share this post with you!

Summer vacation is upon us! If you are living in another hemisphere, ignore that statement.  😉 I know it is currently not summer or winter where I from. The Cotton Candy Kingdom is a magical land and it is currently fall there. All of the Gum-ball Trees are currently dropping their delicious bubble gum. Anyhow- If you are living in the Northern Hemisphere on planet
Earth, it’s time to find some fun outdoor actives for all the littles! Fossilized Dino Eggs are one of my personal favorites. It does take a little prep time, but it is super simple and your kids are sure to love cracking into their eggs and finding their baby dinosaurs! This is a great project to do if you are looking for something on the imaginary play side. Hide the eggs around your yard (or inside if you don’t have a yard or its winter) and pretend that your kiddos are paleontologists on an super important fossil excavation. Or just let their little imaginations run wild… I am sure they can come up with something far more magical adventure. Kids are amazing.

:) :) :)

Here’s what you’ll need:

Small plastic dinosaur toys

2 cups of flour

1 cup of salt

1 cup coffee grinds or potting soil

1 cup of water

(Note: Our batch made 3 eggs– so double or triple the recipe if you need!)

Let’s get started!

1. Combine all of the above ingredients together in a large mixing bowl . Knead until your dough forms. We used coffee grounds and it made our eggs smell amazing! Mmmm!!!

2. Place a dino on a piece of dough and fold in– adding more dough to cover as needed. Roll into the shape of an egg.

3. Let air dry for at least two to three days or if you need you eggs done quicker, bake at 200°F in the oven until dry and hard. I baked ours for 3 hours.

4. Hide them around your yard for your little paleontologists to find and excavate! They will love digging out their baby dinosaurs! We used a Philips Head Screwdriver to crack our eggs open. If you have smaller children, you may want to hep make the first crack and supervise.
