Fall is Magic

I guess I never really put much thought into it before moving to the East Coast. All the other places I have lived… they all had their own unique way of doing fall. Then I moved to New York– and I figured it out.

Fall is magic.

New Yorkers will know what I am saying when I tell you the summers are hot here. It’s definitely a different kind of hot to other places that I have lived in the past. Like an industrial hot… meets a humid hot… and makes a sweaty love child that is capable of melting all make up off your face and causing hair to instantly wilt or curl. So, that little nip in the air is actually the most refreshing thing pretty much ever.

I love everything about Fall. Oversized sweaters, hot cider, colorful scarfs, pumpkins on brownstone steps, apple picking, pumpkin spiced everything. EVERYTHING.  Most most of all… the colors. Purples, oranges, reds, yellows, and golds. The colors make fall magic.

I remember the first time I walked through Central park in the peak of fall. It was as if I had walked onto the set of the filming of the world’s great Rom-Com. Or stepped into the neighboring land of Narnia. Or… (please have patience with me. I pretty much always view life through the lens of film or canvas.) You get it. It was dreamy. I am pretty sure angels stayed up all night with a massive box of crayons and paints and applied magical colors to each and every leaf.

Now of course this image reminded me of leaf printing as a child. So, if it is fall on your side of the planet at the moment… why don’t you try doing this with your little ones? Here is all you need:

 Leaf Printing

(Yes. We are going old school.)

What you need:

1.) An assortment of fall leaves

2.) Paint (Tempera or Acrylic work best)

3.) Paint brushes

4.) Paper

5.) News paper or paper plates

This is basically the world’s easiest craft to explain. You paint the bottom side of your leaf (where the veins stick out), you press the painted leaf down onto the paper and rub, and then lift you leaf to see your beautifully bright leaf print. Repeat. The leaf is basically nature’s stamp.

My Aunt Debbie also has the tradition of throwing a “Harvest Party” each fall. Just simply to have an excuse to celebrate fall, eat delicious food, and play fun games with friends and family. It is one of my favorite things to do with my family during the year. My mom’s side of the family also lives in “the middle of nowhere” Pennsylvania, so it is nice to run around outside and get away from the hustle and bustle of NYC for a weekend. Here are some snaps from the Harvest Party weekend:
