If you are a regular here at this blog, then you already know that leaving leaving out free gifts, treasures, and colors is basically one of my favorite thing to do on planet Earth. Well, 2 Fridays ago was my last day at my nanny job in NYC, so I filled the bottom of #MyLittleStrawberryCupcake’s stroller with all of my left over sidewalk chalk, and set out for Riverside Park. I was in the process of moving to Colorado and I had been going through everything I owned to purge for the big move. I had packed most of my art supplies, but I thought I would do something special with my chalk.

I poured out the chalk into two colorful piles in different locations in Riverside Park. I drew a big circle around them with the message “Draw something magic”, and then sat on a nearby bench and waited.

Slowly, people began to stop and notice the random piles of chalk. Some would smile and keep walking. Some would stop and take a picture of the message. Then it began. A few kids saw the pile of chalk and began to draw. They drew fairy princess wands, pigeons, their family, and all sorts of fun things. I decided to walk over and join them with #MyLittleStrawberryCupcake. I plopped her down near the pile of chalk and taught her how to make colors on the sidewalk. It was the perfect last day together. She did try to eat the chalk a couple times– but surprisingly she was pretty good about just using it to play on the ground. I wish we could have stayed there all night playing and coloring with all the Upper West Siders… but it was later in the day and I needed to take her home to her mommy and daddy.

I decided to walk down the park the next evening and see if anyone else had participated in making the park a little more magical, and when I got there, I was overwhelmed.

The drawings filled the large path and colors were everywhere… 100’s of drawings. I walked up and down the concrete reading all of the messages and snapping pictures. Unfortunately, with the sun and shadows from he trees the pictures where not the best quality– but I had to share them with you!

I am not going to lie, I expected a teenager or two to pick up a piece of chalk another drop a few expletives in there– but there were none! Everything was fun, positive, or silly. I sat down on a bench that was in the centered along the edge of the mural. I watched as couples who take photos with their initials in the hearts, elderly people keep whispering “isn’t this lovely?”, and kids squeal with delight. I am pretty sure my heart was about to explode for real. The ground radiated love. It was the best going away gift NYC could have given me.

Now that summer is truly upon us, why don’t you (and your kids f you have them) take up my Love In Chalk Challenge? It is a wonderful ways to encourage others around you and spread good vibes! Click here to read more– who knows, you could win something fun!

Also, side note: when it comes to buying sidewalk chalk, I really only have eyes for one brand, and that is Crayola. Their chalk has an anti-roll shape, writes on smooth, and has the most vibrant colors. Plus, there are so many colors to choose from that it makes my head want to explode (in the best way possible)! My favorite pack to buy is their 48 Pack, and right now it includes 6 new Tropical Colors for summer! New colors? Yes please. You should most definitely run down to the store and pick up one of these boxes of rainbows. You won’t regret it.
